We fall into the rhythm of the earth. Passion.
|
Sisu Vineyard is more than a simple location on a map. Sisu is where a calling, a lifestyle, a commitment, and a dream collide into a beautiful, tumultuous maelstrom that releases our inner wildness, satiating our deepest yearnings as we fall into the rhythm of this earth. Sisu is the anthem passed down through generations from our farming Finnish forefathers. An anthem of tenacity, resilience, passion, community, and empowerment that emanates from these twisted vines.

The terroir
Sisu Vineyard lies in the heart of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The natural amphitheater formed by the rolling hills of Sisu Vineyard provides not just an uniquely intimate yet expansive environment to tend vines, but with these varying aspects, soil types and microclimates, yields an equally intimate yet expansive pinot noir- expressive of the diversiform terroir from which it is birthed. Eleven acres of pinot noir vines, including nine different clonal varieties, and one acre of chardonnay are draped along the hillsides, including the southwest aspect of the eastern ridge with its mix of rocky volcanic soils, around the south-facing top of the amphitheater, and along the southeast aspect of the larger western hillside with sedimentary soil. The planted vineyard elevation climbs from around 350 to 525 feet above sea level. The vines are personally managed and tended by owners Tim and Anna Czuk (and family), a crew of hand laborers, and Oliver & Eugene, goofy labradoodles and official vineyard guardians.
Sisu is a Finnish term that lacks a direct English translation but connotes ardent tenacity and resilience, representative of the Finnish spirit. While paying homage to Anna’s Finnish farming ancestry, sisu also speaks to the character necessary for farmers and their vines alike when committed to growing world class Pinot noir. |
